Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Book review: A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23

Many books have been written about the Twenty-Third Psalm, and one of my favorites is A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller. It is published by Zondervan, and the copyright is 2007.

The author, Phillip Keller, was a shepherd for many years. This gave him an understanding of both the physical and spiritual meaning behind each phrase of this beloved psalm.

Psalm 23 was written from the perspective of a sheep, and it follows the life of a sheep for the entire year. Phillip Keller describes everything that a shepherd does to take care of his sheep, including preparing pastures that are free of toxic plants, providing clean water for the sheep, defending them from predators, searching for lost sheep, and using ointments and dips to protect against annoying and harmful insects. He compares these things to how Jesus, the Good Shepherd, cares for His people.

Every time I read this book, it encourages and reminds me of how much my Good Shepherd loves and cares for me. Praise His name!
