Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Do You Have the Greatest Thing in the World?

This month I am reviewing The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond. As we look forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day, may we let God’s love shine through us to others.

Dwight L. Moody met Henry Drummond in Great Britain. They developed a close friendship, and Drummond assisted Moody in his evangelistic ministry. Upon hearing Drummond give an exposition on 1 Corinthians 13, Moody was so impressed by it that he urged that this informal sermon be published so everyone could benefit from it. The result is the book The Greatest Thing in the World.

Mr. Drummond takes each verse of 1 Corinthians 13 and explains it clearly and thoughtfully. He describes each of the qualities of love that Paul stated in this beautiful chapter. True love is divine love because God is love.

Here are a few of the truths in this book:

  • Love is the fulfillment of the law. Whatever you do in life, if you have love for God and for others, you will succeed. Your work will have eternal value.

  • As exercising strengthens our muscles, we must practice love, because we don’t automatically have it.

  • Get these characteristics of love into your life. Then what you do, the impact you will have, will last forever.

  • Love is the greatest thing because love is the only thing that will last.

This is a short book, but a powerful one. I highly recommend reading it, but more importantly, read 1 Corinthians 13 regularly and learn to practice God’s love to those around you.

Many different publishers have published the book, so you should search to find which copy you want. Sometimes the word Love is placed as the title.
