Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Don't Miss This Uplifting and Thought-Provoking Movie!

Most of you are aware that C. S. Lewis was a great Christian apologist. But how did he become such a strong defender of Christianity? What shaped his life and thinking? The movie The Most Reluctant Convert answers those questions.

Based on the one-man stage play of the same name, the movie uses C. S. Lewis’s own words to tell his story. Sources for the script include Surprised by Joy, Mere Christianity, The Weight of Glory, and other works by Lewis. Max McLean portrayed Lewis in the stage play, and he narrates the movie (playing an older Lewis), alternately talking directly to the viewer, serving as a background presence in scenes with Lewis as a young man (played by Nicholas Ralph), and speaking a voice-over.

The movie chronicles Lewis’s progression from atheism to theism to Christianity. Max McLean does a masterful job in his portrayal of Lewis, inviting the viewer to join him in the journey through C. S. Lewis’s experiences and philosophical thinking.

Do not be put off by the fact that they show the cameras at the beginning and at the end of the movie. This is the director’s way of going from stage play into and out of the movie. Once Max McLean starts speaking to you, he seamlessly draws you into the movie as one friend conversing with another. The pull away of the camera at the end does abruptly bring you back to reality. The camera pans over to show C. S. Lewis’s gravesite. Obviously, it wouldn’t be appropriate for Max McLean, portraying Lewis, to walk over to the grave.

I never tire of watching this movie. The casting is superb, and the music is wonderful. The story of how God drew C. S. Lewis to faith in Jesus Christ is fascinating. I also love that they filmed in some of the locations where Lewis had lived, including “The Kilns.”
